In the early morning hours of 66, the Daniel J Morrell broke in half its stern passing its bow and sank with the loss of 28 ofThe Sinking of the SS Daniel J Morrell At approximately 2 AM on the 29th of November, 26 year old crewman Dennis Hale was asleep in his cabin in the bow of the ship when he heard a loud banging sound The lights were out in his cabin and Hale rushed outside without getting dressed to see what was going on The story of the Daniel J Morrell has intrigued me since I first read about it as a young teenager She was a classic Great Lakes freighter just shy of 600 feet in length By November of 1966, she was 60 years old She was upbound on Lake Huron fighting the kind of November storm that the Great Lakes are known for
